Phal:Angst – Minor Tremors
PHAL:ANGST celebrate their 20th anniversary with their sixth studio album. “Minor Tremors” intertwines electronic industrial with analogue post rock – dirtier, more direct and a little more pop than anything before. Instead of verse-chorus structures, there is atmospheric mood-building, densification and deceleration, in shades ranging from dark and melancholic to harmonic and romantic. Thematically it covers everything: looming fascism, political hopelessness that can be tipped by collaboration and empathy, and love in times of a burning world. Minor tremors, in other words, that can develop into moderate earthquakes out of nowhere.

le_mol – SPLIT SPLIT
Everything splits. le_mol loop. what remains? SPLIT SPLIT – their 6th post-rock record (Noise Appeal Records).
While some splits are inevitable („Splitsville“), forced („Splitter“) or even pathological („Split Brain“) many a split in society feels avoidable yet driven by certain forces in the discourse („Split The Rich“). If splits were to be split again and again however, wouldn’t that mean a comeback of nuance, plurality and community? SPLIT SPLIT. Due to the split of words and music in le_mol’s instrumentals these titles are mere pointers for interpretation. Except for the existentialist lyrics and vocals of The Zew („Split Tongue“) – a self-proclaimed cyborg folk musician from Vienna. The concept finds its visual counterpart in the collage and monotype artwork of artist Hanna Hollmann. Musically, ’SPLIT SPLIT’ offers a mix of melancholic post-rock and shoegaze with elements of post-punk, ambient and industrial. The use of multiple loop stations allows the two multi-instrumentalists to portray a 5-piece band and leads to surprising twists and turns challenging listening habits. Loops stick together – they never split!

Die Buben Im Pelz – Menschen Ohne Freunde
Die Pioniere der österreichischen Dialekt-Welle veröffentlichen im Oktober ihr neues Album „Menschen Ohne Freunde“. Eine Platte voller morbider Melancholie. Persönliche Erfahrungen mischen sich mit Beobachtungen aus der Stadt an der Donau. Das Sinistre flirtet mit dem Romantischen, bissiger Humor ist fixer Bestandteil.
Die Songs erzählen von Vergänglichkeit, Isolation, aber auch von neuen Anfängen und dem kurzen Moment großer Liebe. Manchmal klingt das musikalisch waidwund, dann wieder kuschelig und leichtfüßig, wie in Zuckerwatte aus dem Wiener Prater verpackt. Für das bemerkenswerte Cover ist der bildende Künstler Roland Reiter verantwortlich, der seit 2023 bei den Buben im Pelz auch hinter dem Schlagzeug sitzt. Seine Skulptur „Henry & Paul“ bildet die Stimmung hinter den neuen Songs perfekt ab.

It is Marilies Jagsch’s voice that oscillates between strength and vulnerability; she takes us by the hand, whispers in our ear, crawls under our skin, all while tentatively exploring these territories. Musically, electronic elements blend with organic sounds. The drums either drive powerfully or deliberately hold back. Voice and guitar often come to the forefront, creating a touching clarity. Jagsch has lived for years with the chronic illness endometriosis and allows us, in a raw and poetic way, to share in her personal experiences, which she compellingly links to collective losses in our uncertain present.
